Department of Forestry and Natural Resources

History and Mission

The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in the College of Agriculture at National Chiayi University (NCYU) started as a high school program in “Chiayi Agriculture and Forestry Public School” in 1919, and gradually developed as school transforming into an Agri-Vocational School, a Junior Agriculture College and finally a National University. The department currently offers both undergraduate and graduate programs for bachelor, master and Ph. D. degrees.

The department is teaching and research oriented and is currently composed of three full professors, two associate professors, five assistant professors and one distinguished chair professor. To achieve a successful development in the forest ecosystem and to upgrade the forest role in providing multifunctional value to the community, the department offers a variety of multidisciplinary courses in the field of forest management, silvicultural techniques and forest ecology. The faculties all have outstanding teaching experience and academic achievements. They provide both well-designed courses and fully prepared teaching strategies in regular training activities for students to establish their solid foundation in basic knowledge of forest science and to enhance their capabilities of dealing with the issues in forest ecosystem management. Thereafter, the graduates are supposed to be professional and highly expected to be intermediate and senior managers in private and public sectors making significant contribution to the sustainability of natural resources in the world.

   While placing equal emphasis on theoretical study and practical training, the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources encourages our students to be well prepared for a better career development in the field of Forest Management, Forest Conservation, Vegetation Survey, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Soil and Water Conservation, Environmental Monitoring and Planning, and Remote Sensing and Forest-Biogeoscience. Through better understanding the importance derived from the Forest Ecosystem, we are also making an effort to approach the reasonable application for sustainable management of natural resources.
