Winning team NCYU Students Sweep Field Robot Contest

Five student teams of National Chiayi University, advised by Huang Wen-Lu, Chairman of the Center of Energy Research & Sensor Technology, College of Science and Engineering, and Yang Zhao-Wang, associate professor of the Department of Biomechatronic Engineering, joined and received the highest records of the College at the “2016 National Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Cup of Field Robot Contest.” They swept the contest, taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and 2 honorable mentions. Chairman Huang indicated that they owed the great achievement this year to the founding of Robot Team by the Center of Energy Research & Sensor Technology. Well-planned training is provided by seniors to juniors, with every member of the team devoting his/her time, day and night, to designing, and processing the machine bodies, as well as writing programs.

According to the results of the Field Robot Contest, the first place went to “NCYU Ultimate Hope Team,” which earned a full score. The team comprises Yang Shu-Yu, Deng Xiang-Guan, Chen Jin-Ming and Zhang Jun-Jie. “Absolute Love Team,” consisting of Chen Wei-Tuo, Wu Ji-Lun and Chen Yin-Tong, won the runner-up prize. The third-place winner, “Biomechatronic Engineering King of Tea Team,” composed of Huang Da-Zhe, Xiao Zhi-Xiang, Xu Zhi-Hao and Huang Wei-Cang, received the same score from the judges. Their robots needed to maneuver independently, precisely spray and water, and navigate the continuous narrow curves, curved hillside roads and dirt paths, and pick up and place empty flower pots. Their scores were calculated based on their finishing time. the Biomechatronic Engineering King of Tea Team placed third, only thirty seconds behind the runner-up. Winners of honorable mentions include “Harvard Clean Team,” made up of Su Pin-Cheng, Xu Jia-Tian, Lai Guan-You and Zhang Li-Xiang, and “Wang Wang Little Group Team,” constituting of Lin Jun-Yi, Wan Jun-Wei, Fu Guan-Jie and Dai Zheng-Zhi.

Yang Shu-Yu, a senior student who leads NCYU Ultimate Hope Team, mentioned that all the juniors were rejoiced that all of them have won prizes at the contest. All the efforts around the clock have finally culminated into a success. They would like to thank especially the University for setting up the robot laboratory, which allows the students with common interest in robot development to gather together. They also expressed gratitude to the graduates who have won the contests for offering valuable suggestions when problems arose.

According to Chairman Huang, the robot needed to “pass five checkpoints,” beginning by precisely spraying and watering three flower pots, then maneuvering through continuous narrow curves, curved hillside roads and dirt paths, followed by picking up an empty flower pot and placing it precisely on a certain spot. All the checkpoints were designed by simulating the farm environment. The narrow curves, curved surface and rough soil surface, for example, were simulations of an actual farm environment. Any defect in software or hardware might cause the robot to overturn or deviate from the path. The robot may one day replace farm labor for precisely spraying and watering, and picking up and moving flower pots.
