Tipsy Farm and 729 Eco Studio NCYU Student Entrepreneurial Teams Tipsy Farm and 729 Eco Studio Secure Top Two Awards at U-start

To encourage young graduates to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, the Enterprise Incubation Center, National Chiayi University, has been successfully guiding five student entrepreneurial teams to obtain subsidies from the Ministry of Education in the “U-start” College Graduate Entrepreneurial Service Program since 2012. This year, Tipsy Farm again won the first place in the manufacturing category and was given a prize money of NT$600,000; and 729 Eco Studio was placed runner-up and given NT$550,000, and also given an additional prize money of NT$50,000 in the social enterprise category.

According to NCYU Enterprise Incubation Center Chairman Chen Cheng-Nan, the candidates need to deal with various challenges to attain the U-start venture funds. In the first phase, they need to stand out among 158 competing teams. Finalists will obtain a subsidy of NT$500,000 respectively, and receive guidance from the school teacher team for six months, before participating in the second phase among a total of 45 new companies. After strenuous efforts, the two student entrepreneurial teams took top two awards, and received venture funds worth a total of NT$1,100,000 respectively through first and second phases.

Chairman Chen said that NCYU has been assisting student teams in starting up micro-enterprises, and enhancing entrepreneurial opportunities for graduates with academic-industrial cooperation as the foundation. Throughout the years, several student entrepreneurial teams have been joining the U-start contest, with a remarkable award winning rate of up to 90%. In the days to come, NCYU will continue its effort to provide guidance to the award-winning teams in developing own-brand products. The objective is to encourage the youth to go back to farming or continue farming, thus reaching the goal of rural regeneration.

Under guidance of Chen Chuan-Wen, assistant professor of the Department of Biological Resources, NCYU, the Tipsy Farm was founded in 2016 with a commitment to producing non-toxic organic agricultural products. Guided by the advisor, they gradually completed tests on pest control crop rotation, and have begun producing organic compositae plants, such as spinach, Taiwanese lettuce, and American lettuce. Of late, they have been increasing yields with contract production, and accepting orders with other farms to offer multiple products and create a win-win-win situation.

The 729 Eco Studio was established by Yang Shen-Tai, Lin Zhi-Xian and Zheng Si-En, all graduate students from different backgrounds. Their entrepreneurial philosophy is focused on sustainable development. To eliminate consumer concerns about aquatic food safety, they insist on utilizing eco-friendly cultivation methods without use of antibiotics or chemical agents. They are also devoted to cultivating white shrimp that are even sweeter and firmer than those grown in freshwater ponds under more general conditions by maintaining the salinity of the pond at more than 2 degrees. By constructing a circulating water system and making feed with agricultural waste, they not only strive to control feed quality, but reduce the cost and pollution caused by waste. The use of an instant liquid freezing technology aims to enhance the quality of white shrimp delivery. Their ultimate goal is to cultivate premium sweet white shrimp.
