Ms. Min-Tun Chuang and eight students of teacher education NCYU Overseas Internship Enhances Students’ Competitiveness in the World

To cultivate students to become teachers with international vision, and enhance their international experience and language abilities, Ms. Min-Tun Chuang, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, National Chiayi University, led eight students of teacher education to join a two-month overseas internship program at Reid Temple Christian Academy (RTCA), Maryland, United States. Seven of the students were from the Department of Foreign Languages, while the other one came from the Department of Education. During the internship, they were required to teach Chinese and English, participate in education training courses and organize activities. The objective was to improve their professional knowledge and teaching ability, international perspective, as well as help the local people have further understanding of the Chinese culture.

According to Associate Prof. Min-Tun Chuang, they selected RTCA for it is a bilingual school. RTCA specially arranged training courses and teaching plans with a view to providing a valuable experience for the Taiwanese students who first tasted American school culture. The NCYU students were not only able to learn different English teaching methods but could have chances to teach Chinese to the children there. The internship program provided a unique experience to the students of teacher education, and was mutually beneficial to both the students of RTCA and NCYU.

During a community bazaar organized by a local church, the Taiwanese students, dressed in cheongsam, set up a Taiwanese tea and pearl milk tea tasting stall to introduce Taiwanese beverages to the local residents of the community. It was also an authentic cultural and food exchange between the U.S. and Taiwan.

After the two-month overseas internship, the NCYU students returned to Taiwan to continue their elementary school teaching practice, during which they would share their teaching and living experience in the U.S. with the children. The program not merely enabled them to have deeper reflections on cross-cultural communication, but helped improve the competitiveness of the next generation.
