The award from Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung(left 2) to President Chiou Yi-Yuan NCYU Recognized as an Educational Institution with Special Contribution to Life Education in 2017

An award ceremony for outstanding practitioners and educational institutions dedicated to life education was organized at Taipei Branch of the National Academy for Educational Research by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Nov. 17th. National Chiayi University was one of the only five universities and colleges in Taiwan that attained the award as an educational institution with special contribution to life education. For the past three years, the university has been proactively dedicated to “Three-5 Hope Project,” and implementation of the student guidance and counseling project entitled “NCYU Feels Like Home: Student Guidance Website – Care For, Recognize and Cherish Your Life.” President Chiou Yi-Yuan specially attended the award ceremony in Taipei, and received the award from Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung.

NCYU President Chiou indicated that to assist college students in navigating their career possibilities, and developing competencies for future career options, they have been facilitating student affairs and counseling services based on “Three Life Education,” which is devoted to “holistic career development” that focuses on implementing education in terms of living, life and career. The goal is to cultivate a life-loving holistic person who recognizes himself, respects others, values unity of theory and practice, cherishes life, stays positive towards life, cares for the underprivileged, studies hard and benefits by the company of friends, cherishes what he has, has wisdom towards life and death, recognizes the meaning of life, and sees himself as a citizen of the world.

“NCYU Feels Like Home: Student Guidance Website – Care For, Recognize and Cherish Your Life” is a three-year project that encompasses two main ideas: “three levels of guidance: life education, and prevention of student depression and self-harm” and “instructors’ engagement in student guidance and counselling.” For now, they have met the objectives to facilitate developmental guidance, intervention counseling, remedial counseling, and instructors’ engagement in student guidance and counselling, Substantial results have been achieved in terms of establishment of the mental health website “NCYU Feels Like Home,” peer counseling volunteer training, thematic classroom counselling, department mental health sessions, mental health publications, examination and follow-up of at-risk students, teacher training in terms of guidance and counseling competencies, etc.

President Chiou stressed that NCYU has instilled the concept of life education in almost every activity it has held. The goal is to urge teachers and students to think about the major life issues, from living, life journey, to human relationships, as well as to encourage students to know their current mental stress status, and enhance self-awareness, so as to practice self-reference, and lead a passionate and proactive life. All the activities have been more well-received than expected.

Life education is an integral part of NCYU, which in recent years has been committed to improving student guidance and counseling, and including it in both required Chinese lessons for general education, and professional classroom activities. The concept is also included in the thank-you ceremony for animal cadavers by the Department of Veterinary Medicine, with a view to urging students to cherish and care for life, and be brave and able to tackle challenges in one’s life.
