President Chiou Yi-Yuan The ceremony opened with Beethoven’s the Pastoral Symphony performed by the NCYU Symphony National Chiayi University 97th Anniversary Events: A Full Display of Diversity and Pursuit of Excellence
To celebrate the 97th anniversary of National Chiayi University, an anniversary ceremony, Final Presentation of the Office of Research and Development, Indigenous Culture Campus Bazaar, International Cultural Festival and Alumni Dinner, among others, took place on the Lantan campus on Nov. 5th. The ceremony opened with Beethoven’s the Pastoral Symphony performed by the NCYU Symphony, and Taiwanese folk song “Springtime Hills” and other Eastern and Western music pieces by the Lantan Chinese Orchestra. A film featuring NCYU overseas students speaking in different languages was recorded by the students to celebrate the anniversary of the university. Students from the Indigenous Culture Service Club and Research Club performed spectacular indigenous songs and dances in tribute to the 97th anniversary of the university, fully showcasing the progress on the objective of cultural diversity of NCYU.

In his address, President Chiou Yi-Yuan thanked the former presidents for their impeccable leadership, to the alumni for their support, and to the faculty, staff members and students for their dedication. It is the synergy of their efforts that enables NCYU to grow on a continual basis into a remarkable, renowned comprehensive university, and show the KANO spirit of “never give up” to the world. In the year past, the teachers have showcased exceptional research results in terms of both academic research and leading research and development teams. The students have also made a wide diversity of achievements, obtaining awards in different contests at home and abroad.

President Chiou stressed that the highly competitive global economy and rapid changes nowadays have brought unprecedented challenges, thus the university is dedicated to implementing the “Three-5 Hope Project.” The project aims to reinforce teaching with innovative thinking, demonstrate the spirit to strive for excellence, and establish the characteristics and reputation of the school. The ultimate goal is to enable NCYU to reach another peak by attracting students at home and abroad to study at NCYU, and inspiring the students with a sense of local concern and global awareness.

The ceremony was attended by approximately a hundred guests of honor including Chiayi City Mayor Twu Shiing-Jer, NCYU former presidents, Su Yi-Ji, president of the NCYU National Alumni Association, and 21 distinguished alumni selected this year. Chai Wu-Zhang, honorary chairman of the NCYU Alumni Association, presented the giant collectible baseball, jointly given by the Japan High School Baseball Federation and Asahi Shimbun in tribute to the university, bringing a warmth and sincere atmosphere to the grand event.

The anniversary celebration activities of NCYU this year put to display the school development guideline of “connecting the local with the global” by launching a series of events. The “International Cultural Week” featured exotic cultural performances, cuisine and exhibitions by students from various countries. “Hymn to Winter,” a joint exhibition on paintings and calligraphy by NCYU alumni–Prof. Li Wen-Jen and Prof. Lin Chin-Chung, both maestros of paintings and calligraphy–kicked off at the library in the afternoon today. “Indigenous Peoples’ Night” boasted performances on traditional songs of remote indigenous tribes by an indigenous tribe band, a fashion show featuring student club members wearing different tribal clothes, and an indigenous celebratory feast of roast pig. The audience was also invited to dance with the performers to the indigenous songs.

According to the event organizer, “NCYU Thao Tribe: Alishan Agricultural Specialty Products Holiday Market” took place at the plaza before the Chiaho Gymnasium. In addition to exhibition and sales of sticky rice, white barley, red brown rice, handmade sugar, thill bamboo shoots and other indigenous agricultural products, there was a fashion show and concert featuring performers clad in tribal clothes by the Indigenous Culture Service Club and Power Band.

A final presentation of the anniversary academic research of NCYU themed “NCYU Library Four-Season Cultural Creative Exhibition 2016” was also organized. The exhibition included Chinese calligraphic pieces, ink paintings and other works displayed over the course of the year at the library. There was also a wide spectrum of cultural creative products on display, such as table lamps and nightlights printed with oil paintings on canvas, and tiles printed with the paintings via thermal transfer process. Artistic works ranging from ceramic art, dyed fabric, design to oil painting, done by students from the Department of Visual Arts and Arts and Humanities Center during class, manifested ingenuous originality in form, color, texture and arrangement, among others. There were also furniture pieces and furnishings designed by teachers and students of the Department of Wood Materials and Design, including wooden folding chairs, round stools, wooden chairs, wooden tissue boxes with Taiwanese totems, Japanese-style storage boxes, wooden photo frames, small storage boxes, as well as wooden piggy banks shaped as houses. The exhibition also featured sales of such products as health bread, free range chicken eggs and yogurt made by the Department of Animal Science, which were sold out soon after being displayed. The event embodied the theme for this year’s NCYU anniversary celebration activities: “innovation and piloting.”
