In conjunction with the academic policy to enhance academic exchange with Southeast Asia, an academic delegation led by President Chiou Yi-Yuan from National Chiayi University arrived in Malaysia to sign an academic cooperation agreement with Dr. Thock Kiah Wah, President of Southern University College, on July 5th on behalf of both universities, which officially became sister schools. On July 6th, the NCYU delegation signed a sister school agreement with New Era University College with the hope of promoting Chinese language education together. In the days to come, both universities will carry out academic exchange by co-organizing student and teacher exchange programs and symposiums. The objective is to provide students with more diverse learning opportunities and cultivate them to be top-notch practitioners with an international perspective.

President Chiou indicated that NCYU seeks to discuss opportunities of exchange and collaboration with Southern University College, and also to open special education classes and classes taught in Chinese with New Era University College. In the future, NCYU will initiate more dialogues with both universities to create more opportunities and room for cooperation.

According to NCYU, on the first day of arrival in Malaysia, the academic delegation was warmly received by NCYU alumni led by Jiang Wen-De, chairman of the NCYU Malaysian Student Association. The delegation also used this opportunity to catch up with the alumni, and knew more about the agricultural and educational status quo in Malaysia.

Founded in 1990, Southern College was upgraded into a university and renamed as Southern University College in 2012. It is the first higher education institute established with funds raised by Malaysian Chinese, including Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Engineering & Information Technology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Art & Design, Faculty of Chinese Medicine, and Faculty of Education & Public Welfare.

The construction of New Era University College was mostly funded Malaysian Chinese. The college places emphasis on cultivating a spirit and thinking that reflect the times, and also, due to sponsorship from the Malaysian civil society, a heart to contribute back to the society.
