Opening ceremony for “National Chiayi University LanTan Xue-Yuan Plaza” LanTan Xue-Yuan Plaza Chiayi City Government Helps Improve Roads around Lantan Campus and Provide Better Living Quality for NCYU Students
Under the assistance of the Chiayi City Government, the access road improvement project for the Lantan campus of National Chiayi University has finally been completed. The project is believed to improve the living environment and traffic safety at and around the student dormitories on the Lantan campus. An opening ceremony took place at NCYU LanTan Xue-Yuan on Sep. 7th at 9:00 a.m. Chiayi City Mayor Tu Xing-Zhe led the municipal delegation to review the newly-constructed sites, and joined an opening ceremony for “National Chiayi University LanTan Xue-Yuan Plaza,” hosted by NCYU President Chiou Yi-Yuan. Also participated in by a number of NCYU administrative supervisors led by President Chiou, the grand ceremony was lively with participation of foreign freshmen and even travelers in Lantan.

In his address, President Chiou said that the Syuefu Road connected to the highway around the Lantan Lake was too narrow, and traffic accidents happened to teachers and students all the times since they needed to walk on the same road as the cars and scooters, which was also caused by poor line of sight at the corner. Today, he would like to express gratitude to Mayor Tu for supporting them throughout the projects of widening the roads around the campus, and renovating both the LanTan Xue-Yuan Plaza and main gate. The projects aimed to widen the access road and make it safer for dorm residents to pass, provide smoother traffic flow, and expand the turnaround space for buses. An access pathway to Qingshui Temple was specially established to allow dorm residents to buy meals around Qingshui Temple by foot, without having to make a detour from the dormitory’s main gate, which might increase the risks of traffic accidents.

In conjunction with the projects, President Chiou mentioned that NCYU set budgets and applied for subsidies from the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2017, which totaled NT$10 million. With full support from the Chiayi City Government, construction projects as follows have successively been completed in the past 7 months: from first to last, removal of the walls and guardhouse, movement of security facilities into campus, renovation of the LanTan Xue-Yuan, whitewashing of the rooms at the Third Female Dormitory, whitewashing of the outer walls at the Fifth and Sixth male dormitories, and reconstruction of the barrier-free rooms at the Sixth Male Dormitory. The goal of these projects is to provide better accommodation for students.

According to NCYU, the reconstructed barrier-free rooms, which were made possible with subsidies from MOE, are expected to reduce the inconvenience the physically challenged students might experience in daily life, and allow them to enjoy higher-quality accommodation at the student dormitories.
