NCYU international students wear their own costumes come into play The baseball war dance NCYU Anniversary Sports Event Kicks off with Breathtaking Parades
On the drizzly morning of Nov.3rd, in celebration of the 98th anniversary of National Chiayi University, a sports event opened in the track and field arena on the Lantan campus. Athletes from different departments spared no effort to orchestrate their own unique, stunning opening ceremony parades. The parade from the Department of Biological Resources, with players carrying the anniversary mascot “longhorn large shovel-shaped insect”, marked the first to enter the arena. It was followed by the vigorous squad of the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation, who held everyone's attention with their performances such as “baseball war dance” and “gong and drum ensemble & dragon and lion dance.” The opening ceremony was climaxed by the parade by the Department of Visual Arts, who entered the arena dressed as “construction workers.” The performance was designed by Tseng Wei-Ting, one of the athletes from the department, to promote the concept of environmental awareness, and wish everlasting prosperity to NCYU.

According to Xu Huan-Fang and Sun Wan-Zhu, who organized the parade of the Department of Biological Resources, it was the idea of Huang Qun-Ting’s that they chose the longhorn large shovel-shaped insect as their anniversary mascot. The longhorn large shovel-shaped insects are endemic species in Taiwan, living in the more indigenous mountainous areas at low to medium altitudes throughout the island. By adopting this rarely seen insect as their anniversary mascot, they hoped to raise awareness to protection of the natural environment, and also the importance of cultivating talents in the field of species conservation. Every classmate was involved in the making of the mascot, during which they needed to check related details and photos. To reduce cost, they constructed the mascot mainly of utilized recycled resources such as waste cartons, newspapers and pipes. By mobilizing the freshmen to participate in the process, they hoped to help further their knowledge of morphology and living habits of insects, and encourage them to exercise their individual abilities and share ideas, and, ultimately, develop a stronger sense of belonging and identity towards the university.

Su Keng-Fu, Chairman of the Physical Education Office, NCYU, introduced the series of activities in conjunction with the sports event this year. A running competition took place on Oct. 25 at 6:30 a.m., with President Chiou Yi-Yuan shooting the gun to start the race. The competition that lasted about 1.5 hours was joined by around 600 teachers and students, who, male or female, young or old, needed to run a distance of 6 kilometers. From Nov. 3rd to 4th, in addition to competitions including water sports, track and field, cheerleading and tug of war, there were also the more relaxing eleven-legged race and badminton and tennis games for the faculty and staff. The latter activities were joined by a total of around 4,000 athletes from the faculty, staff and student groups.

The most attention-getting about the annual sports event, as usual, are the cheerleading competitions. The squads were comprised of students from the Department of Special Education, Department of Early Childhood Education, Department of Education, Department of E-learning Design and Management, Department of Applied History, Department of Visual Arts, Department of Chinese Literature, and the Department of Foreign Language.

According to the university, the torch was lit by Huang Yan-Zhi and Qiu Sheng-Mei, both sophomores of the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation. Huang obtained the third place in the College Volleyball League 2016 in the open male sophomore’s category, first place in the National Youth Cup Volleyball Championships 2016 in the high school men’s category, first place in the Taipei City Chung-Cheng Cup 2016 in the high school men’s category, first place in the Taipei City Chung-Cheng Cup 2015 in the high school men’s category. Qiu placed second in the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games 2016 in the 60 kg class, second in the National President Cup 2016 in the women's open 60 kg category, and also second in the Taiwan International Martial Arts Festival 2017, in its fourth edition, in the 60 kg class of Wushu Sanda, or Chinese kickboxing. Both students have received wide recognition for their remarkable achievements in sports games.

Highlight of the sports event – athlete’s oath was given by Li You-Rui, a senior of the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation. He won the first place in the National City Cup Track and Field Championships 2017 in the men’s long jump category, first place in the Kaohsiung Cup 2017 in the men’s long jump category, as well as second place in the Autumn Cup 2017 in the men’s long jump category.
