Lantan Chinese Orchestra NCYU Student Clubs Sweep Awards at National Student Music Contest
National Chiayi University’s student clubs are frequent winners in many competitions. This year, they swept several awards at National Student Music Final Contest in Southern Taiwan for Academic Year 2016-2017. Lantan Chinese Orchestra won an exceptional award in the category of Chinese music ensemble, and an excellence award in the field of Chinese chamber music; an excellence award in the wind ensemble category went to Wind Band; and Soul Image Chinese Music Club was winner of an excellence award in Chinese chamber music.

Chen Ming-Cong, NCYU’s Dean of Student Affairs, commented the outstanding achievements were the results of joint efforts of the club members, who stayed at school to practice after class. It was also a display of their remarkable skills. Among all the teams who made it to the final, the Lantan Chinese Orchestra made the greatest accomplishments by winning the first exceptional award in the category of Chinese music ensemble since its founding 50 years ago.

According to the Lantan Chinese Orchestra, a student club at NCYU, the key to their achievement was that they selected the challenging piece, Silk Road by Jiang Ying as their self-chosen song. The magnificence of the score offers a taste of the exotic Xiyu or Western Regions, and distinctive characteristics folk art. To perform this difficult song, the club members had been doing their utmost to practice repeatedly in their spare time. They also underscored the uniqueness of the song with the accompaniment of special musical instruments such as a Xingjiang hand drum. Their won acclaims from the judging panel and attained the exceptional award, beating the other seven competing teams.

The Lantan Chinese Orchestra chose Layers as their designated song for the contest in the Chinese chamber music. The richness of stringed and woodwind instruments was enhanced by layering and interweaving of the sounds. By creating an image of “range upon range of mountains, boundless cloud and water,” they hoped to convey the composer’s nostalgia for the ancient past. They won the excellence award with their self-chosen song Bodhi in This Mortal World, which demonstrated the ideas of the unlimited powers of the Buddha and transmigration.

Cheng Jian-Xin, Leader of the Soul Image Chinese Music Club, mentioned all their club members are students from the Teachers College and College of Humanities and Arts. They had been proactive in staying at school to practice together after school, and their seniors also came to share their competition experiences. With their joint efforts, the club members successfully obtained the excellence award for their remarkable performance. They will continue their efforts and improve
