“Birth, aging, illness and death” are parts of our life’s journey, but health and longevity remain what we have sought after from the beginning of time. National Chiayi University President Chiou Yi-Yuan, feted as Dr. Peanut for his title as professor of the Department of Food Science, is dedicated to exploring why peanuts have long since been called “longevity fruit.” After efforts of over forty years, his research and development team has finally found out convincing scientific evidence. Resveratrol and arachidin-1 (Ara-1), an ingredient from the same family with stronger biological activity, extracted from active peanut bud powder are conducive to longevity if consumed through dietary supplement. The research results proved that peanuts are effective in prolonging life.

President Chiou indicated that the R&D team had fed two strains of mice (BALB/c and ICR) aged 10 and 11 months respectively with mouse basal feed incorporated with peanut bud powder everyday. Animal experiments had been conducted for 750 days and 762 days each, and the treatment lasted until natural death. According to the death curves of each group, the feed with peanut bud powder is proved to be helpful in increasing life expectancy. The team was invited to announce the research results at 15th International Conference on Food Processing and Technology held in Rome, Italy in October 2016. In January 2017, the results were officially published in the internationally renowned journal Food and Nutrition Sciences. The research results, a culmination of efforts on the part of the R&D team over a long period of time, have transformed peanuts from an agricultural crop to a health care product, and are indeed a long-awaited, immense breakthrough in the biotechnology industry.

The research and development team led by President Chiou had been carrying out a series of studies on the estrogen regulation of resveratrol and Ara-1, one of the other ingredients from the same family with stronger biological activity, extracted from active peanut bud powder. Based on experimental results, both resveratrol and Ara-1 can help regulate hormones and Treg cell activity in spleens. Moreover, Ara-1 demonstrates higher activity than resveratrol, and the active peanut bud powder has much higher content of Ara-1 than of resveratrol. Therefore, the active peanut bud powder, when consumed through dietary supplement, can lengthen life expectancy. Consumption of resveratrol and the ingredient from the same family can regulate the hormones of mature men and women, and ease their menopause symptoms, so that they can enjoy health and live to an advanced age. The research results were published in International Journal of Molecular Medicine in 2016.

According to NCYU, the results of research and development have drawn attention from the industry. In 2016, they signed an academic-industrial cooperation agreement with Hong Zhuang Co., Ltd. With a budget of approximately NT$3 million, they had delved into pilot production and developed dietary supplement products based on the lab’s research results. After more than a year’s theoretical study, they found that peanuts are effective in prolonging life under certain conditions. The team has formally authorized technology transfer, which enables development of commercialized products. It is expected that the dietary supplement capsules will be produced and put on sale in a year.

A seminar on the R&D results was organized on the Lantan campus of NCYU on April 26th at 10:00 a.m. A technology transfer contract was signed between NCYU President Chiou and Zhang Yong-Lin, chairman of Hong Zhuang. Since innovation is critical to the development of derivative technologies and products, NCYU proposed an authorization framework to gradually enhance the financial feedback on derivative benefits within a period of twenty years with a view to encouraging new companies to undertake new technology challenges. When the products are officially on sale, the authorized company will offer financial feedback on derivative benefits in phases. The financial feedback for the last five years will account for up to 7.5% of the total sales, which would attract more new companies to develop new products with higher added values. The ultimate goal is to generate a win-win situation for both sides through long-term technology transfer of R&D results.
