NCYU President Chyung Ay (middle) received the graduates at the entrance to the venue. NCYU Graduation Ceremony for the Academic Year 2017-2018: President Chyung Ay Encourages Graduates to Pursue Dreams
The graduation season unfolds with phoenix trees blossoming in full glory, while flowers of golden shower trees pave a yellow carpet to bid farewell and blessings to recent graduates. National Chiayi University’s graduation ceremony for the academic year 2017-2018 was held on June 9th on the campuses of Lantan and Sinmin with live streaming. At 8:40 a.m., President Chyung Ay received Vice President Liu Rong-Yi and other first-level supervisors and graduates, who had finished a campus tour, into Zuei-Suei Guan on the Lantan campus. The ceremony on the Sinmin campus began when the teachers and students had a campus tour led by Lee Hung-Wen, dean of the College of Management, and Chou Shih-Jen, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

In his speech, NCYU President Ay expressed congratulations to all recent graduates on behalf of all teachers and students, and wished them a successful career in the future. President Ay mentioned that the graduation ceremony means a new commencement in life, and the graduates, who either enter the workplace or pursue further studies at graduate schools from this moment on, will embark on another journey in life. In this life journey, there are inevitably some ups and downs, challenges and competitions, which they need to fearlessly accept. The theme of the graduation ceremony this year, “Life Goes as the Mind Wishes,” is something he expects in his innermost heart. The mind decides which action he/she wants to takes and when it should be carried out. The future society requires a global, forward-thinking, and open-minded perspective, and an ability to reflect and think. This year, NCYU passed the review of the Ministry of Education for the Higher Education Enhancement Program, and is currently implementing the Three-5 Hope Project, which he hoped to take NCYU to a new level. At the end of his speech, he again encouraged the students that life is a course of endless learning as you need to pursue excellence on a daily basis with perseverance. The graduates, with his best wishes and spiritual support, should solider on, accomplish themselves, bring honor to their parents, alma mater and the country, and thus fulfill their lives.

Chiayi City Mayor Twu Shiing-Jer congratulated all the attending graduates and thanked NCYU for cultivating outstanding students in Chiayi. It is a first-rate university that boasts nearly 3,000 recent graduates with bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees. Today, the first-rate students are proud to have studied at NCYU; and someday, he believed, the university will be proud to have had them as students. It is said that the graduates should be like full-fledged birds that spread the wings and fly high. But why? The eagles fly to the heights so that they can get a panorama of the beautiful landscape. Therefore, they should commit themselves to enhancing their competencies and expanding their perspectives, so that they can enjoy magnificent sceneries of life from a higher view. Mayor Twu encouraged the graduates to focus on their goals and never give up, since their future lies in their own hands.

There are a total of 2,896 graduates at NCYU this year, including 19 with doctor’s degrees, 670 with master’s degrees and 2,207 with bachelor’s degrees. During the ceremony, Mr. Zhang Yong-Lin was awarded the Honorary Doctor’s Degree of Education. A graduate of the Department of Food Processing, National Chiayi Institute of Agriculture, now NCYU, he has been dedicated to research, development and manufacturing of paintball products. He not only turns paintball games into a popular recreational activity in the world, but helps make the paintball industry in Taiwan a global hub of production. Honorary Doctor Zhang, who has contributed greatly to the society, encouraged all the attending young graduates that, “There is only a wall between the society and school, and more challenges will come your way once you step out the campus.” He also shared his past experience and said, “First, do not be afraid of failures; and second, always be curious.”

That Guo Nai-Zhi, a graduate of the Department of Applied Mathematics, received Diligence Prize marked one of the most moving episodes of this year’s graduation ceremony. Guo, who suffers from congenital spinal muscular atrophy, never gives in to fate but braves challenges and limitations, and meets whatever challenges life brings. He insisted on being on time for every class, and had obtained scholarships every semester all through the four years in college. He studied hard and successfully applied for a five-year bachelor’s to master’s program. In addition, he had served as an on-campus student worker for TSMC at the Center of Special Education Student Resource, where he assisted in some paperwork. In the spare time, Guo, who proactively lives in the moment, had led table games on the three campuses of NCYU, which helped enhance his logical reasoning, patience and interpersonal relationship.

To accompany his younger brother and help him realize the dream of finishing a bachelor’s degree, Guo Nai-Wei decided to shut down the restaurant, cast his dreams aside, and “study in college again” to keep him company. They went to classes and lived together. Nai-Wei, as the older brother, cooked for him, three meals a day, and took him to sessions of rehabilitation therapy. He will carry forward and keep on learning with Nai-Zhi, who is going to start his graduate studies soon. In recognition of Nai-Wei’s altruistic devotion to his sibling, NCYU specially presented him with Brotherhood Prize at the the ceremony.
NCYU President Chyung Ay expressed his blessings to all graduates and urged them to dream bravely and pursue their life goals at the graduation ceremony. As part of the NCYU’s graduation ceremony on the Sinmin campus for the academic year 2017-2018, College of Management Dean Lee Hung-Wen led the graduates on a campus tour. Mr. Zhang Yong-Lin was awarded the Honorary Doctor’s Degree of Education at the graduation ceremony, during which NCYU President Chyung Ay moved the tassel on his caps.
