A team of National Chiayi University, advised by President Chyung Ay and Department of Biomechatronic Engineering Associate Prof. Yang Zhao-Wang, attained the first prize in the adult category at the Cross-Strait Youth Maker Competition 2018, in its third edition. They won the prize with “Design and Development of Intelligent Environment Monitoring and Regulation with LoRa Technology.” The five-member team consists of students including Deng Xiang-Guan, Tang Yu-Xiang and Chen Yu-Yi, and Research Assistant Lin Ming-Yan from the Department of Biomechatronic Engineering, and Peng Yi-Jing, a visual designer based in a coworking space in Taichung called Monospace. The candidates in the adult category this year competed for one first prize, two second prizes, four third prizes, and six business awards.

The competition was hosted by Tongji University, Shanghai, and organized by Tongji University College of Design and Innovation, and Fablab O, a fab lab in China. With the theme of “Our Smart Future,” it focused on Chinese culture, education, environment, health, urban future and sustainable development. While combining innovative design concepts with forward-looking technology, it aimed to stimulate students’ creative thinking. It also hoped to promote humanities and arts, and products of social and commercial value. All the competing teams were required to submit proposals, which were later screened by the panel of judges commissioned by the organizer. There were adult and youth categories in the competition, and as many as 210 competitors made it to the final rounds. Among them, 59 came from Taiwan.

The final contest took place from August 17th to 22nd. Before it was officially unveiled, the organizer of the event arranged wonderful site visits and experiencing activities for the competing teams, allowing the competitors to feel the charm of high technology up close. They visited such places as Shanghaino Welding Workshop, Synthetic Biology Workshop, Subtraction Workshop, Two-Dimension Workshop, and Zero-based Creative Programming Workshop. The competition officially started from August 20th with the highly challenging “48-hour Maker Marathon,” in which the competing teams needed to carry out their proposed prototypes, integrate hardware and software designs, development and testing, and submit a design project or product of practical value, all within 48 hours.

According to the NCYU team, their works were inspired by the concepts of disaster prevention, environmental safety and smart city. Thus, in making the products, they tried to correspond to the need of monitoring common harmful gases in the environment. The products can safeguard your safety and property by reminding the users of ambient environment changes through a mobile app or web browser. The project includes indoor and outdoor monitoring stations, at the bottoms of which a variety of sensors (for CO, CO2, LPG, PM, temperature, and humidity) are installed. By transferring data via the emerging wireless communication technology, LPWAN (LoRa), it can immediately transfer measurement results to the cloud. The users may obtain immediate information through either a mobile app or web browser. Also with the actuating device of the integrated automatic air exhaust window, it enables preventive activation of an actuating device when the concentration of a certain gas exceeds normal standards. It can effectively reduce the concentration of harmful gases in the environment, prevent disasters, and thus safeguard your safety and property.

Explanations at the final contest: Chen Yu-Yi, a student of National Chiayi University, explained the concepts and reasons for creating the device.
