The Higher Education Enhancement Scholarships Appreciation Event was held on Nov. 17th (Sat.) on the Lantan campus by the Office of Student Affairs, National Chiayi University. The Guang Yuan Charitable Foundation CEO Song Mei-Fen and staff were invited to attend the event, where a total of 60 students who obtained the scholarships shared their feedbacks. By presenting scholarships and providing a platform for experience sharing, the event aimed to encourage financially challenged students to pursue studies and express appreciation for the charitable deeds of the foundation. Prof. Charles Shu, an alumnus of NCYU, was also invited to join the event and, with the topic of “Career Exploration,” shared with the students his experience of how to prepare for their careers. In his speech, he encouraged them to bravely take challenges, make breakthroughs, accumulate experience, enhance their skills, and go through trials and errors in the workplace without fear.

Guang Yuan has been funded by David Sun, founder of the internationally-known memory card supplier Kingston. Since 2008, David Sun and his wife had been offering scholarships to Taiwanese students under the David and Diana Sun Foundation, a private foundation based in the U.S. The objective was to help students from financially disadvantaged families to pursue studies, from elementary school to university. On Apr. 15th, 2010, they set up the Guang Yuan foundation in commemoration of his mother, Dai Guang-Yuan, who sowed the seeds of charity. Guang Yuan passed on the philanthropic idea of offering help to students who have difficulty pursuing studies due to financial reasons. Without asking for returns, it hopes to uphold the spirit of “Extending the Love” (i.e., letting altruistic love live long and prosper). Song Mei-Fen, CEO of Guang Yuan, indicated that the foundation treats every scholarship-winning student as their own child, hoping to form a big family with the graduates and current students through continuous care and support. With mutual warmth and assistance, they will together cope with future challenges with an attitude of thankfulness, sharing, confidence, trust, bravery and optimism. According to Wu, one of the scholarship-winning students from the Department of Veterinary Medicine, NCYU, thanks to assistance from Guang Yuan, he is able to take care of the younger severely physically challenged brothers at home with more spare time. It not only helps lift financial burden for his parents, but motivates him to focus on his studies. Another winner of the scholarship, Wu, from the Department of Visual Arts, thanked Guang Yuan for the scholarship, which allows him to pay attention to academic learning without having to make a choice between taking a part-time job and studying. The scholarship enables him to focus more on his school life.

According to Huang Tsai-Wei, Dean of Student Affairs, NCYU, Guang Yuan has been helping a great number of financially challenged students to pursue studies by providing scholarships, which allow them to study without financial concern. They are dedicated to extending their philanthropic efforts, and contributing back to the society by offering assistance to students in need. He thanked Guang Yuan for providing scholarships worth NT$2.3 million to 46 students in the academic year of 2018, which enable the students go to school without financial worries. With the spirit of “Extending the Love,” Guang Yuan hopes every student who has/had won the scholarships to pass on the love, thus providing assistance to others in need in the future.
