The junior student team of the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, won the first prize at “National Cup: Educational Youth Farmer Landscape Display” in 2019 Taiwan International Orchid Show. NCYU Department of Horticultural Science Ranks Top Ten Most-Liked Departments and First at Taiwan International Orchid Show in 2019
One of the world’s three major orchid exhibitions, 2019 Taiwan International Orchid Show kicked off on March 2nd, attracting orchid lovers and the public to feast their eyes on the floral displays. This year, the ten-day Taiwan International Orchid Show is presented with the theme of “Orchid Land,” with a special focus on the pavilion themed, “Orchid Land, Reading Tainan.” The concept of cultural and creative industries and a competition on new orchid species are introduced to the show. By crafting a forest of orchids, the organizer hopes to take visitors on a trip back in a time tunnel to explore the stories of old Tainan. What is noteworthy is that the teachers and students of the Department of Horticultural Science, National Chiayi University, who have been joining this internationally renowned event for ten years, won the first prize at “National Cup: Educational Youth Farmer Landscape Display” in this year’s show with “There the Scholar Was.”

The entries presented by the top three winners of the competition in the student category are put on display at the Taiwan International Orchid Show. The first-prize winner is a junior student team from the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, who stood out among 19 competing teams from different educational institutes. The team members include Huang Ding-Xuan, Chen Qiao-Wen, Lin Ding-Tai, Fu Yan-Zhen and Dai Shao-Geng. Their work was inspired by a trip to Tainan Confucian Temple, also known as “The Highest Institute in Taiwan.” Its serene solemnity and awe-inspiring magnificence had since been inscribed on their memory. Thus they rendered the work with the theme of “There the Scholar Was,” i.e., “Here is the Confucian Scholar.” An imposing yet blooming scene was brought to life in the forms of a prosperous forest scene, breathtaking Phalaenopsis cascades, and a splendid tree of wisdom with Dendrobium. To pay tribute to Confucius, they decorated the desk with a brush, ink, paper and ink stone and “The Chapter of Great Harmony,” an excerpt from Book of Rites. The centerpiece of Confucius’s teaching delivers a desire for world harmony and peace. The wish tree allows every viewer to stop for a while and write down their wishes, hoping for a brighter future.

The senior student team of the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, who didn’t win the competition last year, staged a comeback by earning an honorable mention. Their entry was designed with the fish farming in Tainan as the central idea, presented with the theme of “An Dream World of Orchids.” The landscape encompasses orchids such as Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Cymbidium sinense, Paphiopedilum, Maxillaria, and Dendrobium. The team was singled out among 20 teams competing in the youth farmer category. The team that won the honorable mention is composed by Cai Yu-Ran, Jian Bi-Cheng, Xiao Cheng-Yan, and Dai Wen-Jin. Their prize-winning landscape successfully blended both the natural and cultural scenes of Taijiang, Tainan. It also strikes viewers with their boundless ingenuity by adopting marine debris – float balls, which aims to emphasize the significance of environmental protection. Through the work, they wish that the exuberant cultural scene and wealth of resources in Tainan would not be ephemeral as an imaginary dream.

According to Shen Rong-show, Chairman of the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, the department boasts R & D teams dedicated to cultivating fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers for beauty. It also features an orchid biotechnology program and Horticultural Technology Center, both are recognized among the best in the country. They are also devoted to cultivating interdisciplinary professionals that meet the needs of the orchid industry. Its core curriculum design with a focus on economic orchids strives to expand the depth and scope of “developing professionals in orchid biotechnology” by nurturing orchid professionals who meet workplace demands. They have been encouraging teachers and students to further their interaction with the orchid industry. This year, thanks to the Higher Education Enhancement Program, hosted by the Ministry of Education, 52 students of the department participated in the organization of the Taiwan International Orchid Show after recommendation and screening. They not only learned how to curate and install exhibitions, but was well-recognized for their application of professional knowledge of orchids to the arrangement of the orchid show. All the prize-winning students who joined the small-scale landscape competition this year have utilized their professional knowledge of orchids and demonstrated great potential for landscape installation. It was a hard-earned success indeed for them to be well-received by the judges. The senior student team earned an honorable mention. The junior student team joining the competition surpassed the excellent work of their seniors and won the first prize. One and all are invited to visit the Taiwan International Orchid Show and show support to the students.
The prize-winning works from the NCYU Department of Horticultural Science attract attention among the visitors. The senior student team of the Department of Horticultural Science, NCYU, earned an honorable mention with “An Dream World of Orchids.” The Horticultural Technology Center, National Chiayi University, serves as a cradle for future orchid professionals.
