NCYU Department of Applied Chemistry Research Results Published on Cover of an Internationally Renowned Journal: New Hole Transporting Layer Brings New Hope for Solar Cell Technology
  Assistant Prof. Yan-Duo Lin, Department of Applied Chemistry, NCYU, led Research Assistant Chung Hsin-Chen, to develop a series of new organic small-molecule materials of the hole transporting layer. In a collaboration with Associate Prof. Lee Kun-Mu from Chang Gung University Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Profs. Tahsin J. Chow and Shih-Sheng Sun from the Academia Sinica Institute of Chemistry, their research results were applied to the recently popular perovskite solar cells. They not only shed new light on improving cell components process, but effectively reduce preparation costs and energy consumption, bringing new goals and outcomes worth anticipating in practice. The new research results were published in the latest issue of the journal, Energy Technology (Feb. 2019). It was also worth mentioning that the research was selected as the cover article for the issue.

  The issue of energy has become a focus of world attention, and the solar energy is widely regarded as a sustainable renewable energy that can be utilized most immediately. The latest developed solar cells are produced with perovskite materials as the light-absorbing body. In the past nine years, the photoelectric conversion efficiency has immensely increased from 3.8% in 2009 to over 20% now. The hole transporting layer materials used for producing the traditional perovskite solar cells were known for the complicated steps of synthesis, difficult purification, exorbitant costs, and relatively low cell components stability. All these factors are considered an impediment to future goal commercialization.

  Thanks to efforts made by the research team led by Assistant Prof. Yan-Duo Lin in recent years, new hole transporting layer materials have been successfully developed. The new materials boast an easier-to-prepare structure, better cell components stability, and higher photoelectric conversion efficiency (17.7%). The research results and design marked a remarkable progress in the advancement of solar cell technology.

  Prof. Mong Liang, Chairman of the Department of Applied Chemistry, NCYU, solar cells serve as one of the most representatives of renewable energies for power generation. The perovskite solar cells that adopt the new hole transporting layer materials developed by Assistant Prof. Yan-Duo Lin boast a photoelectric conversion efficiency of over 17%, almost as much as 18% of the commercialized module crystalline silicon solar cells. Their studies marked a brand new attempt and breakthrough, providing new insight into future development of perovskite solar cells.
