TFRI Deputy Director-General Wu Mon-Ling (left) and NCYU Vice President Chu Chi-Shih examined the maturity of Alexandrian laurel kernels. Secrets of “Polynesia Sacred Oil” Unveiled: Alexandrian Laurel Seed Kernel Oil as a Value-added Application in Academic Research Cooperation
“Alexandrian laurel” is one of the beautiful ornamental plants in Taiwan, and one of the significant plants grown on flatlands in the country due to its wind-, drought- and salt tolerance. Its seed kernel oil can be applied to medicine, medical treatment, skin care products and foods. For the past five years, Ms. Gu Wen-Jun, a student of the on-the-job master program of food science, microbiology, immunology and biopharmaceuticals at National Chiayi University, has been dedicated to basic and application-related research on the seed kernel oil of Alexandrian laurel in a collaboration project between the university and Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (TFRI), Council of Agriculture (COA). Recently, the research team of NCYU Vice President Chu Chi-Shih successfully developed a technology of extracting anti-ultraviolet active ingredients from the seed kernel oil, which proves effective to promote wound healing complete with anti-cancer properties. Under support of the COA project, the team is committed to animal experiments on wound healing, with a view to developing natural products for wound healing. In the upcoming days, they hope to delve further into high value-added products and applications related to seed kernel oil of Alexandrian laurel.

Also dubbed Populus euphratica or Danae racemose, Alexandrian laurel is up to 8 to 15 meters in height and regarded as one of the multi-purpose coastal species of high economic values. It has long been treated as a source for traditional medicine in Southeast Asia. For the past twenty years, TFRI has been dedicated to investigation and research on converting the seed kernel oil of Alexandrian laurel as a source for biodiesel production. Their studies have found that the seed kernel of Alexandrian laurel has an oil content up to 50% to 60%. The viscosity of biodiesel produced from it conforms to the CNS standard, and proves to be the best among all the materials studied. Recently, TFRI and CPC Corporation has been engaged in academic-industrial cooperation targeted at breeding plants with large fruits. The objective is to develop high-quality biodiesel, solidify the fruit production technology, and ultimately increase the Alexandrian laurel oil supply produced at home.

According to research results, Wu Mon-Ling, Deputy Director-General of TFRI, indicated that the seed kernel oil of Alexandrian laurel demonstrates effectiveness in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and sunblock terms. The relevant medical cosmetics have also been launched for consumer use. After opportunities to transfer the “technology of extracting Alexandrian laurel oil of different colors” were announced by TFRI, pilot products such as sunscreen cream, hand cream, essential oil ointment and rich cream have been developed. More variety in the Alexandrian laurel oil series is to be expected with more collaborations from the industry.

Most of the Alexandrian laurel in Taiwan is grown for environmental greening. There has been insufficient fruit production due to small cultivation area, estimated to be no more than 50 acres. According to NCYU and TFRI, there is a need to facilitate the growing of Alexandrian laurel, develop the seed production technology and ensure sufficient supply so that the needs of domestic producers could be met. Development and applications of Alexandrian laurel as high-value products could be enhanced through cooperation among the industries, government and academic research organizations.
