A lesson on soil at the Eco-Friendly Farming – An Introductory Class on Crops. NCYU Agricultural Education Training Program for People Interested in Agricultural Practice
To provide trainings for people interested in agronomic crop cultivation, organic eco-friendly farming and agricultural products processing, the Agricultural Extension Center, National Chiayi University, organized the Agricultural Education Training Program jointly with several of NCYU departments. The program included three classes from June 19th to June 28th, titled “Introductory Class on Agronomy”, “Advanced Class on Agricultural Products Processing,” and “Eco-Friendly Farming – An Introductory Class on Crops.” The program, joined by 105 trainees, aimed to promote food and farming education, and fulfill the social responsibility as a university on behalf of NCYU.

The Introductory Class on Agronomy was headed by Shin-Lon Ho, Chairman of the Department of Agronomy, NCYU. The class covered topics such as the current status of Taiwan’s agronomic crop industry, soil fertility management, pest control, and small agricultural machinery (introduction, operation and maintenance). There were also site visits about rice breeding and field cultivation at the Chiayi branch of the Tainan District Agricultural Improvement Station, and about sweet potato breeding and field cultivation at the Chia-Yi Agricultural Experiment Station. The diverse sessions were taught by professionals from both inside and outside the university, and greatly benefited the trainees.

The Advanced Class on Agricultural Products Processing was supervised by Luo Ji-Yo, Chairman of the Department of Food Science, NCYU. The courses covered subjects including: food safety, hygiene and preservation; food additives and packaging; an introduction on the agricultural products processing technology; an introduction on the development of bean supplements; product development and internship on diversified processing of fruits and vegetables; processing of fermentation of agricultural products; and fruit and vegetable fermentation practice. By focusing on both theory and practice, the class introduced the trainees to the preliminary processing technology of agricultural products, and was expected to help solve the problem of overproduction of agricultural products.

To raise public awareness towards ecological environment, the NCYU Agricultural Extension Center offered the Eco-Friendly Farming – An Introductory Class on Crops in conjunction with the training program. The introductory class was conducted under guidance of Hou Jin-Ri, Chairman of the Center, covering three perspectives from policies, comprehensive discussion to diverse crops. It was aimed to shed light on the policies, soil fertility, weeds, and pest management, as well as on eco-friendly cultivation of individual crops such as rice, vegetables, and fruit trees. The comprehensive courses enabled students to learn coherently, hoping to elicit an interest in organic and eco-friendly cultivation of agricultural crops.

According to Chairman Hou Jin-Ri, the training program was joined by trainees from 17 to 68 years old, with more than 80% graduating with a college or graduate degree. As professional, part-time or future farmers, they come from a diversity of backgrounds, all aspire to hone their skills or learn more about agriculture and agricultural processing. Chairman Hou added that NCYU has been offering agricultural training courses open to all since 2014. The objectives of the courses are to provide professional skills training in such fields as agronomy, horticulture, agricultural processing, and operation and maintenance of agricultural machinery. The program enables the trainees to gain further knowledge about food and farming education, and the evolution of intelligent agriculture, with the ultimate goal of helping the farmers cope with such issues as food safety, production and marketing, and labor shortages.
