A group photo of the honored guests attending the unveiling ceremony of the Garden for Planting a Hundred Trees National Chiayi University Centennial Anniversary Celebration: Century-old Glory Lives On
The centennial anniversary celebrations of National Chiayi University took place on the Lantan campus on Oct. 26th. The grand event was attended by guests of honor including NCYU former presidents, Control Yuan President Chang Po-Ya, Executive Yuan Secretary-general Li Meng-yen, Chiayi Mayor Huang Ming-Hui, Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-Liang, Legislator Li Jun-Yi, NCYU Alumni Association President Zhang Yong-Lin, and representatives from sister schools around the world. Their participation filled the occasion with warmth and grandeur.

“Planting a Hundred Trees” was held to showcase NCYU’s educational philosophy and spirit of passing on the heritage, and to recognize the generous donations from all walks of life, companies and alumni. Chang Po-Ya, President of the Control Yuan, took the time in her busy schedule to come visit the NCYU Kano Pavilion, and attended the meaningful garden opening ceremony. The saplings are grown on the campuses of Lantan and Minghsiung. Meticulously cared for by NCYU, the hundred saplings will grow into trees in the future, bursting with messages of gratitude to be shared around the campus.

After the garden opening ceremony of Planting a Hundred Trees, a marching band led the guests of honor to the Staff Consumers’ Cooperative Store for the unveiling ceremony of the 100th Anniversary Stone Inscription. Luo Qing-Yuan, Honorary President of the NCYU National Alumni Association, donated the 100th Anniversary Stone Inscription to celebrate the centennial anniversary of his alma mater. Inscribed with the motto of NCYU “honesty, diligence, innovation and service” written by President Chyung Ay, it is expected to remind the teachers and students to remember the motto, adhere to the spirit of the motto, move forward into the next hundred years, and unwaveringly contribute their part to the well-being of country and society. In her address, Chiayi Mayor Huang Ming-Hui mentioned that, in the earlier days of NCYU, the Agricultural Technical Service Team had helped establish diplomatic ties with several countries for Taiwan, or the Republic of China. In the next hundred years, the university is bound to carry its mission of education with even more spectacular achievements.

This is the first time the anniversary ceremony of NCYU takes place along with a music concert. The Choir and Symphony of the Music Department, NCYU, were invited to deliver a RAP rendition of the centennial songs “Centennial Harvest,” “Sailing Through the Wind and Waves” and “Greatness of NCYU.” Nini Wei, a young singer-songwriter graduating from NCYU, gave a live performance and shared her story of pursuing her dream and songs she created. “HJ band,” a rock band consisting of four members from different departments, and other entertainers who graduated from the university presented a kaleidoscopic feast for the ears. Also an alumna of NCYU, Hsiu Chen Chiang, the first Taiwanese female to complete the “Seven Summits,” presented a photo of her reaching the summit of Mount Everest to the university, wishing another century of success to NCYU. Li Meng-yen, Secretary-general of the Executive Yuan, indicated that NCYU is an outstanding comprehensive university which has over the past hundred years trained innumerable distinguished alumni around the world, who have been contributing what they have learned in different sectors, and dedicating themselves to serve the society, communities and the country. These are the greatest achievements NCYU has made for the past century. Weng Chang-Liang, Magistrate of Chiayi County, said that Chiayi is a key agricultural producer in Taiwan, and NCYU is a century-old educational institute founded on agricultural studies. Since agriculture is the foundation of everything, he hoped that not only will Taiwan become a better place with NCYU, but that Chiayi will continue to prosper and grow because of NCYU, which will help supply them with professionals whenever the demand emerges.

In his address, President Chyung Ay said that it was their pleasure and honor to witness the 100th anniversary of NCYU, which allowed them to see the evolution of higher education in Taiwan. Over a hundred years, NCYU has continued to build on its solid foundation with focuses on education and agriculture. By facilitating interdisciplinary and integrative research among teachers and students, it has become the hub of geographical knowledge and social welfare in the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan region. After founding the Intelligent Agriculture Research Center in 2018, it received a grant worth NT$8.5 million from the Council of Agriculture for a project called “Establishing the System of License Training for Flying Agricultural Plant Protection Drones,” in October this year. A “drone license testing site,” which will be established to provide training and license testing for agricultural drones, is expected to make a breakthrough in agriculture in Taiwan. To expand the students’ worldview, and strengthen the opportunities for international exchange and collaboration, the university has 106 sister schools over the global so far, which greatly helps expand the global reach of the university. They have also facilitated academic cooperation and substantial exchange across regions and a network of alumni associations all over the world, as well as entered into long-term strategic partnerships.

During the ceremony, “Distinguished Alumni Award 2019,” “Alumni Meritorious Service Award 2019” and “Education Institute Donation Award for Academic Year 2018-2019” were presented to the outstanding alumni in recognition of their commitment to NCYU. At the ceremony, Legislator Li Jun-Yi mentioned that he, who is proud of being part of NCYU, will do his best to make it a better place. He also wished growth and prosperity of the university. At the end of the ceremony, President Chyung Ay sent birthday wishes to the centennial of NCYU, and urged all the teachers and students to work together for the prosperity of the university. The guests of honor stood behind a flowing sand panel symbolic of the best times, and poured the golden sand slowly down the panel, where the characters of “NCYU’s 100th Anniversary: Remarkable Achievement” shimmered into sight, pushing the centennial anniversary ceremony to a climax.

An unveiling ceremony of the 100th Anniversary Stone Inscription, donated by Luo Qing-Yuan, Honorary President of the NCYU National Alumni Association, took place on the anniversary day. A group photo of NCYU President Chyung Ay and winners of the Distinguished Alumni Award The Choir and Symphony of the Music Department, NCYU, performed the centennial songs.
