 Teachers of Tung-Shih Elementary School explained on the herb planting and application results.NCYU Fulfills Its Social Responsibility: Remote Area Hope Project Presentation

  National Chiayi University and Wynne Social Welfare Charity Foundation co-organized the Remote Area Hope Project Presentation for the academic year 2018-2019 at Tung-Shih Elementary School, Chiayi County on July 30th. The event unveiled with aerobic boxing and passionate aboriginal dance accompanied by a jovial ocarina performance by young students of Tung-Shih Elementary School and Li-Ming Elementary School, led respectively by Principal Yeh Chia-Lang and Principal Chiu Guang-shing. The exciting performance moved the audience with the innocence and vivacity of the children. Led by President Chyung Ay, teachers and students of NCYU worked with teachers and students from Tung-Shih Elementary School and Li-Ming Elementary School to display final results in both static and dynamic fashions. The aim was to demonstrate abundant final results of herb planting, the use of horticultural herbs, and essential oil extraction on the campus.

  During the event, NCYU Vice President Liu Rong-Yi explained the overall development of the project. Prof. Ho Kuen-Yih from the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources shared the results of around 2,000 essential oil plant seedlings, from indigenous cinnamon, cajeput, Australian tea trees, Lemon eucalyptus to lemongrass, that have been cultivated at NCYU, Shekou Forest Farm, Li-Ming Elementary School, Tung-Shih Elementary School as well as in local communities. In his lesson on the essential oil extraction technology, Jin-Yi Wu, Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Biopharmaceuticals, taught teachers, students and local participants how to make handmade soap, anti-mosquito essential oil and other health products. Department of Horticulture Prof. Hong Jin-Xiong promoted herb planting and application, hoping to make both campuses known for “Li-Ming Herbal Sky” and “(Herb) Aquaponics System at Tung-Shih.”

  According to Huang Tsai-Wei, Dean of Student Affairs, seven of the NCYU student clubs have been engaged in diverse tutoring programs during summer and winter vacations. The tutoring programs aim to stimulate creative thinking in the children, and allow them to see the world in a different light, and cultivate a new set of skills. By recruiting teachers from different backgrounds, Teacher Education Center Chairperson Wu Chih-Yi said that they hoped to develop a professional curriculum and promote teacher professional growth. With a miscellany of teaching models, they taught such subjects as information, sports, horticulture, reading, mathematics, etc., in a lively and vivid way, enabling the children to contribute to their fullest potential. Last but not least, Associate Prof. Chih-Hung Lin, Graduate Institute of Mathematics and Science Education, with the use of digital archives, presented a blog dedicated to the results of the Remote Area Hope Project and a 360-degree VR (virtual reality) film. The 360-degree VR film provided an immersive, lifelike experience that invoked a sense of wonder to the viewers.

  NCYU signed an academic-industrial collaboration project, entitled “Remote Area Hope Project” with the Wynne Social Welfare Charity Foundation on July 16th, 2016. The ten-year agreement is worth NT$12 million, and this year will be third year of the medium-term plan. As host of the project, Vice President Liu expected all NCYU teachers and students to fulfill their social responsibility by facilitating schooling and community economic development in remote mountainous or coastal areas of Chiayi. President Ay urged them to work towards the long term goal, and, by establishing the first essential oil sightseeing factory with local characteristics in Taiwan in the days to come, hoping to drive the prosperity of the community, and create a vision of new hope and sustainable development in the remote areas.
