Taiwan-Philippines Academic Cooperation Deepens with a Cooperation Memorandum between NCYU and MECO

To facilitate academic exchange with the Philippines, Chyung Ay, President of National Chiayi University, signed a cooperation memorandum and an agreement on recruiting students for master’s and doctoral programs with Angelito Tan Banayo, Chair of Manila Economic and Cultural Office, MECO, in Taiwan, on February 13th. It is a big step forward for the Taiwan-Philippines academic cooperation, by maximizing benefits through resource sharing and continuous dedication to such collaboration projects ranging from human resources training, academic-industrial cooperation, employment, internships, continuing education to think tank.

Ms. Irene S. Ng, Director of Kaohsiung Extension Office, Manila Economic and Cultural Office, acted as witness to the signing of the agreement. Last December, she visited NCYU and discussed with President Chyung Ay and Vice President Chu Chi-Shih on possibilities of cooperation in terms of Filipino students studying in Taiwan and on-the-job training program for foreign workers. The signing of the agreement helped ensure the willingness to cooperate on both sides, who are positive for future collaboration.

NCYU President Chyung Ay indicated that the university, well equipped with teacher and physical resources in agricultural terms, is able to offer necessary help to the Philippines. By cultivating agricultural professionals and providing technical consultancy services, they hoped to develop substantial relationships between Taiwan and the Philippines. According to Angelito Tan Banayo, Chair of MECO in Taiwan, she expected to send recommended Filipino students to join agricultural, aquacultural and management courses at NCYU, and invite NCYU teachers to offer academic exchange guidance in the Philippines.

Currently, NCYU is committed to designing training courses and planning for related programs targeting mutual needs, wishing to bring to fruition ideas to cooperate. Meanwhile, it is also devoted to minimizing the impact of declining birthrate, and seeking a matchmaking platform that brings potential Filipino students to study at NCYU. In addition to signing a cooperation memorandum, they signed a collaboration agreement on recruiting students for master’s and doctoral programs. The collaboration agreement aims to recommend or encourage Filipino government officials or local teachers to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees at NCYU via MECO.

A comprehensive university recognized by its history and scale in the Yunlin and Chiayi region, NCYU is known for equal development in teacher education, humanities and art, management, agriculture, science and engineering, life sciences, and veterinary medicine. It has been proactively cultivating outstanding talents, providing four programs taught in English, including the Global Master Program of Tourism and Management (College of Management), Global Master Program of Teaching Profession (Teachers College), Global Master Program of Agricultural Science (College of Agriculture), and Global Master Program of Life Sciences (College of Life Sciences). So far, NCYU has cultivated numerous distinguished overseas professionals, who later acted as teachers or practitioners in their homelands.
