NCYU Horticultural Week Hopes to Bring Wealth to the Farmers with Pineapple Promotion

The annual Horticultural Week, organized by the student association of the Department of Horticultural Science, National Chiayi University, kicked off on the first floor of the Student Activity Center on the Lantan campus from May 20th to 24th. The festive five-day event was part of the centennial anniversary of NCYU. With the Student Activity Center as the main venue, there was also a special exhibition at the building of the Department of Horticultural Science. The exhibition featured “Life Tree,” created by the students to invite you to explore her story. The Pineapple Variety Tower captured your attention right away with a display of 17 varieties of pineapple. In addition, the organizer offered fresh pineapple, freshly cut pineapple, pineapple soft serve, pineapple juice and other products for sale. There was also fun games for the visitors such as the “pineapple matching game.” The objective was to make the pineapple a hot selling item, thus bringing wealth to the farmers.

Filled with sweet aroma of the pineapple, the venue also boasted a wide spectrum of indoor small potted plants, ranging from herbs, succulent plants, Tillandsia, orchids, to carnivorous plants. In terms of handmade art, there were scented wax tablets, which you could use to fill the room with fragrance; and dry flower earrings that were one of a kind. The gourmet team prepared pineapple products, dried red dragon fruit, earl grey pound cake, and Hong Kong-style milk tea. Have no idea what to have for afternoon teas? Just come join the Horticultural Week and you’ll find the answer! The event highlighted a check-in event: just take a photo with the giraffe, with the check-in board in hand, and upload it to the social media website. By doing so, you could get a chance to win a TASTy meal coupon and freshly cut pineapple. You could capture people’s attention by eating the pineapple while walking around the campus.

According to NCYU student Wang Yu-Qi, who organized the event, horticulture is a comprehensive domain that covers anything from vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, gardening, to horticultural products handling and processing. So all the students needed to pool their knowledge together by putting their knowledge into practice to make the event come true. In addition to the widely known herbs and grass flowers, also on display were succulent plants, Tillandsia and staghorn fern that were extremely popular in recent years. Among them, the carnivorous plant, such as Nepenthes, Sarracenia and Venus’s flytrap, immediately became the focus of everyone’s attention. Want to know more about the curious insect-catching mechanism? Come find the answer at the Horticultural Week.

Advisor Jiang Yi-Lu indicated that the Horticultural Week 2019 was entitled “Green Horticulture” to promote the idea to green our living environment by putting horticulture into practice in daily life. The event was a culmination of professional knowledge of the teachers and students from the Department of Horticultural Science. They hoped to provide a straightforward introduction for the visiting public. The pineapple identification activity, for example, allowed the public to know more about the pineapple. Also worth mentioning were the products displayed for sale: all the products were meticulously prepared by the students, so all were welcome to see and make your purchase.
